The Print Center is pleased to present a Conversation and Book Talk with photographers Sarah Kaufman and Lydia Panas. The artists will speak about their individual publications and practices, as well as shared themes across these projects and bodies of work.
Sarah Kaufman’s book Devils Pool (Daylight Books, 2021) is a collection of photographs made at the famed swimming hole of the same name in Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Park. Featuring images of local residents and visitors escaping the noise of the city to find solace and recreation in the water, the book explores the significance of this place for generations of Philadelphians.
Lydia Panas’ book Sleeping Beauty (MW Editions, 2021) features striking images of women reclining in nature. The images speak to the positions women and girls have been placed in historically, while centering the gaze of the subject and collaboration between photographer and sitter. Panas notes: “While my subjects do in actuality turn their gaze towards me, it’s as if at times I turn the camera onto myself, both in the present and back in time.”
