The Renaissance Graphic Arts Award

April Flanders (born Macon, GA; lives Boone, NC) received a BFA from Florida State University, Tallahassee and an MFA from Arizona State University, Tempe. She has exhibited at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Edgewater, MD; ArtSpace, Richmond, VA; and American University Museum, Katzen Arts Center, Washington, D.C. She was a fellow at Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Amherst. Her work is in many public and private collections, including the Asheville Museum of Science, NC; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Tucson Museum of Art, both AZ.

Statement from the Artist:
Scientific research on invasive species is at the core of my work, which addresses invasions in aquatic habitats. Relying on the visual language of dichotomy, I create work in which viewers are confronted by the destructive organisms and globalized landscapes they are complicit in generating.
