Robert Asman’s unique gelatin silver prints are a product of the ‘magic’ in the darkroom. He utilizes many different photographic processes, but is perhaps best known for his chemically altered prints. He compares the process to being a sculptor; he sees the potential within the paper and uses chemicals to bring it to the surface in the same manor that a sculptor would approach a block of stone. Asman is a craftsman, educator and artist who lives and works in Philadelphia. He received a BA from Catholic University and an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. He has taught at Drexel University, University of the Arts, and presently teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. He received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and has been actively engaged in making and exhibiting his works in galleries and museums around the world.
