Disguise,
intaglio/relief/chine collé,
Ed. a/p, 1998, 25” x 19"

Born and educated in Japan, Yuji Hiratsuka makes small edition color intaglio, relief and chine collé prints. He draws inspiration not only from the humorous and colorful aspects of the Ukiyo-e tradition, but also Western influences of fashion, invention and lifestyle. Bright colors and whimsical depictions further characterize his distinctive style. “In my work I draw from the ancient and from the contemporary to express the mismatched combinations and hodgepodge that is Japanese daily life.” Hiratsuka has received prizes in print competitions in the U.S., Japan, England, Korea, the Netherlands, and Eastern Europe. His prints are in the permanent collections of the British Museum, the Tokyo Central Museum, the Achenbach in San Francisco and the Portland Art Museum.
