The Print Center announces its 101st ANNUAL International Competition, to be juried by Pepe Coronado and Shana Lopes.

The ANNUAL is one of the oldest and most prestigious art competitions in the United States. Open to local, national and international artists, The Print Center is particularly interested in highlighting the use of photography and/or printmaking in new and intriguing ways, including in content, form and process.

Any artist using Photography and/or Printmaking as critical components of their work can enter. Artists whose work pushes the boundaries of traditional photographic and printmaking practices are encouraged to enter. 2D and 3D works, including artist books, are eligible. 

The Print Center honors the power of photography and print to raise and amplify a multiplicity of voices. We are committed to fostering that power to advocate for change as well as supporting artists working for equity and justice in our exhibitions and programs. The Print Center welcomes artists, audiences and participants of diverse backgrounds, races, religions, sexual orientations and gender identities. We value diversity all facets of operations and in the range of communities with which we engage. We welcome and encourage the participation of individuals of all backgrounds who are inspired by our shared purpose.

This year the ANNUAL has two excellent jurors:

The Jurors will select a group of 25 Semifinalists + 10 Finalists.

Semifinalists and Finalists are eligible to receive a wide variety of exhibition, museum acquisition, cash and material prizes generously offered in support of the ANNUAL, including:

  • Three Solo Exhibitions at The Print Center (Finalists only)
  • Art Museum of West Virginia University Purchase Award
  • Stinnett Philadelphia Museum of Art Collection Award
  • Awagami Paper Award
  • Callan/McNamara Award ($1,000)
  • MVS Project Review Award

  • The Print Center Honorary Council Award of Excellence
  • The Jacqueline L. Zemel Prize for Printmaking ($500)
  • Numerous additional material prizes

MORE ABOUT THE JURORS

Pepe Coronado is Director and Master Printer at Coronado printstudio, a collaborative, mission-driven workshop serving artists since 2006. He has an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore. In his own decades-long practice as a printmaker, he has been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. His work is held in many public and private collections including the Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX; El Paso Museum of Art, TX; Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles, CA; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; and the Library of Congress and Smithsonian American Art Museum, both Washington, DC. Coronado is a founding member of the print collective Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA.

Shana Lopes, PhD, is Assistant Curator of Photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA. She has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, an MA from The University of Arizona, Tucson, and a PhD from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. She has curated / co-curated exhibitions such as Constellations: Photographs in Dialogue; Sightlines: Photographs from the Collection; A Living for Us All: Artists and the WPA; Zanele Muholi: Eye Me; The SECA 2024 Art Award; People Make This Place: SFAI Stories; and Alejandro Cartagena: Ground Rules. Over the past sixteen years, she has gained curatorial experience at the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY.

Entry Fee: $45 – for up to five single images or videos

The Print Center raises 100% of its operating budget each year, and fees from the ANNUAL directly support the mounting of the three Solo Exhibitions and digital portfolios from the ANNUAL, as well as all of our compelling and innovative programs.

Eligibility

Any artist using photography and/or printmaking as critical components in their work can enter. Work submitted must have been completed in the last three years. Up to five images may be submitted and only one submission per person is allowed.

Former ANNUAL Semifinalists and Finalists are eligible to apply.

 

Slideroom

Each uploaded file must be labeled with: Title, Date, Medium (e.g. etching, inkjet, gelatin silver, lithograph) and Dimensions (paper size, video duration or installation measurements). Additional information, up to 1,000 characters, may be included, but is not required.

Accepted file formats for submission:
Images: Up to 5 MB/each: jpg, png, gif
Videos: Up to 250 MB/each: mov, wmv, flv, mp4

AWARDS + EXHIBITIONS

  • 25 Semifinalists and 10 Finalists will be selected by the Jurors.
  • Semifinalists and Finalists are eligible for institutional acquisition, purchase, cash and material awards.
  • Finalists are eligible for Solo Exhibition Awards.
  • Semifinalists and Finalists receive online portfolios and are included in a digital presentation in The Print Center’s galleries during the Solo Exhibitions.

Museum Acquisition Awards

  • Stinnett Philadelphia Museum of Art Collection Award
    Selected by curators from the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, work will be accessioned into the Philadelphia Museum of Art's permanent collection.
  • Art Museum of West Virginia University Purchase Award
    Selected by Aaron Levy Garvey, Director and Robert Bridges, curator, work will be accessioned into the Art Museum’s collection through the Beth and Joe Hestick Acquisitions Fund.

Digital Exhibition

Images submitted by Semifinalists and Finalists will be presented onscreen at The Print Center during the Solo Exhibitions (January – March 2027).

Online Portfolios

The Print Center will mount an online portfolio exhibition for Semifinalists and Finalists, including up to five images/videos, biographical information and artist statements. Finalists may present an additional five images for inclusion (up to ten).

MVS Project Review Award

Mary Virginia Swanson, a highly respected author, advisor and educator, will offer a private, hour-long virtual project consultation and review. Two artists (both Semifinalists and Finalists are eligible) will be selected to receive this award.

 

Solo Exhibitions

Three Finalists will be selected by The Print Center to receive Solo Exhibitions at The Print Center (January – March 2027) as well as an honorarium. Selected artists will work with our Jensen Bryan Curator on the selection of works and installation design.

The Print Center provides:

  • A fully curated exhibition in one of our three galleries, as well as installation and deinstallation, gallery signage and labels and the opportunity to present an artist talk. Art work is fully insured while on The Print Center’s premises.
  • PR and marketing for the exhibition, including visual branding, promotion via press release to over 2,500 press outlets, exhibition announcements distributed in hard copy and digitally, a dedicated exhibition webpage, weekly email newsletters to 10k subscribers and social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky to over 22k followers.
  • Published Gallery Notes – a full color, professionally printed exhibition brochure, distributed free of charge and also available as a pdf on The Print Center’s website.
  • Professional photographic documentation of the exhibitions.

Exhibiting Artists are responsible for:

  • Delivery/shipping of work to and from The Print Center, and any other cost not explicitly covered by The Print Center, including framing (if required).

Sales

If artworks are available for sale, including museum acquisitions, The Print Center will facilitate sales transactions, including shipping. The Print Center will receive a 50% commission on works sold. The Print Center will pay the artist’s commission 90 days from the close of sale.

Liability

The Print Center is not responsible for damage to work during shipping or delivery. Works are fully insured while on The Print Center’s premises.
