SUMMARY:94th ANNUAL Solo Exhibitions | Gallery Talks + Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talks: 5:30pm\nOpening Reception: 6:00 – 7:30pm\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n \nMiguel A. Aragón: Indices of Silence/Índices del silencio\nAragón’s heroic-sized prints address the war on drugs unfolding in his hometown of Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico. Using innovative print techniques\, such as cutting woodblocks and paper with an industrial-grade hand drill\, he creates gripping portraits that humanize the victims of this violence. \n \nYoung Sun Han: The Unforever Parallel\nApproaching loss from both personal and collective points of view\, Han explores his family narratives through the geopolitical history of North and South Korea in the 20th century. He traces the immigrant experience across the 38th parallel north (the border between these two countries). His photo-based installations poetically depict the places rooted in these histories. \n \nRon Tarver: An Overdue Conversation With My Father\nTarver reimagines the African American experience in the U.S. under Jim Crow\, as interpreted through the lens of his father Richard Tarver\, a photographer who captured this community in Fort Gibson\, OK during the 1940s and 50s. Looking back at his father’s archive and appropriating its imagery\, Tarver reworks them to reflect on the history of the tight-knit African American community in Fort Gibson\, re-presenting its triumphs and tribulations. \n  \nPress Release

DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n92nd ANNUAL \nDaniel W. Coburn: Becoming a Specter\nJulie Anne Greenberg: Considerable Uncertainty Remains\nJacob Koestler: Copy of a Copy\nMay 18 — August 4\, 2018 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 17\, 6:00 – 7:30pm \nGallery Talk with the Artists and Curator: Thursday\, May 17\, 5:30pm \nThe Print Center is pleased to present solo exhibitions of new work by Daniel W. Coburn (Lawrence\, KS)\, Julie Anne Greenberg (Raleigh\, NC)\, and Jacob Koestler (Cleveland\, OH). These artists were selected from the 420 applicants to our 92nd ANNUAL International Competition. The jurors for this competition were Keliy Anderson-Staley\, Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Media\, University of Houston\, Texas and Katherine Ware\, Curator of Photography\, New Mexico Museum of Art\, Santa Fe. \nThe three artists selected for these exhibitions take a critical view of the role of the printed image in their work\, from images by Coburn that challenge the tropes of the family photo album\, to Greenberg’s use of screenprinting as a means of creating and breaking apart patterns\, to Koestler’s use of a mixture of different print media to capture the relationship between observation and final image. \n–  John Caperton\, Jensen Bryan Curator\, The Print Center \nThursday\, May 17\, 2018 \n5:30pm Gallery Talk with the Artists and Curator \n6:00pm – 7:30pm Opening Reception \nFree and open to the public \nExhibition page \nAnnual International Competition page \nImages (left to right): Daniel W. SUMMARY:Opening Reception and Gallery Talk for Summer 2016 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening Reception and Gallery Talk for our Summer 2016 exhibitions\, Jeffrey Dell: Sightings\, Andrew Fillmore: This Time is Always the Present and Leah Mackin: Portable Document. \nGallery Talk: 5:30pm \nOpening Reception: 6:00 – 8:00pm \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the shows: \nThe prints in Jeffrey Dell’s exhibition\, which depict sheets of curled and folded paper\, are deceptively simple. In his screenprints\, colors shift and flux\, challenging our perceptual abilities. “I am interested\,” says Dell\, “in how basic human desires cooperate with facilities of perception. I am trying to make an image that is seductive\, but where the very thing that seduces us also deceives.”\n_________________________________________________ \nThe photographs in Andrew Fillmore’s exhibition are still lifes and portraits\, all of which depict the objects and scenarios most immediate to his everyday life. Fillmore says he is concerned with “the idea that within the simplicity of these moments\, a balance of fragments and associations might disclose the psychological threads of my experience in the present.”\n_________________________________________________ \nLeah Mackin’s exhibition Portable Document is composed of images\, based on digital photographs\, of historical material available online. Mackin responds to the digital surrogate of the scrapbook\, examining the handling of and relationship with archival materials as physical objects. In this show\, work from Mackin’s ongoing investigation of materials\, both physically and intellectually\, include printed works on paper and sculpture that reflect on her interaction with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (the institution that holds The Print Center’s Archives).
