SUMMARY:The Print Center Honors: Legacy
DESCRIPTION:A Special Evening Honoring\nAnn & Don McPhail and Robert J. Morrison\nWednesday\, November 19\, 2014 | Cocktails 6:00pm; Dinner 7:00pm \nThis is the fourth event counting down to our 100th Anniversary in 2015. This year we celebrate The Print Center’s Legacy of supporting Collections and Collectors and recognizing the contributions of our honorees. \nAnn & Donald McPhail The McPhails have been deeply engaged with the city’s art and cultural institutions for many years. They built an exceptional collection of works on paper\, and their donations have substantially benefitted the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum. Don served as President of The Print Center from 1978 to 1985. Their collection evolved in tandem with The Print Center’s changing program. \nAnn attended the Barnes Foundation and she just celebrated her 50th year as a Museum Guide. She concentrates on Asian art and has made more than 30 trips to Asia to expand her knowledge; she is active in the Geographical Society of Philadelphia\, and was their first female president. Ann was also instrumental in designing and maintaining the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Society Hill 18th Century garden\, and has assumed responsibilities for restoring Fairmount Park’s Japanese Garden. \nDon was employed by Atlantic Richfield for 37 years\, retiring in 1986. Don has also served as General Manager of the Pennsylvania Ballet from 1987-88 and Vice President of Finance and Administration at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1989-90. He is also an Emeritus Trustee at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  \nRobert J. Morrison is a contemporary art collector and curator with a special passion for prints and photographs. His engagement with The Print Center began in the late 70s when he moved to Philadelphia and bought a print on his first visit. Since then he has developed an expansive and excellent collection as well as a passion for mentoring new collectors. The original spark to collect was ignited by the art and artists he came into contact with through his career in advertising\, which includes BBDO (New York)\, McCann-Erickson (New York\, Toronto & London) and several Philadelphia agencies including his own organization The Project Group. He is the recipient of over 235 national and international creative awards. Recent projects include the development of The Fine Art of Tangible Assets with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors guiding collectors and institutions to utilize their collections for philanthropic endeavors and m(eye)environment – Kids Exploring Digital Photography with the University of the Arts and Hussain Aga Khan.

SUMMARY:Paul Cary Goldberg\, Tutta La Famiglia: Portrait of a Sicilian Cafe in America at University of the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Paul Cary Goldberg’s “Tutta la Famiglia: Portrait of a Sicilian Cafe in America” began in spring 2007 when he started photographing inside Caffé Sicilia. Goldberg writes\, “I had been a semi-regular patron for about eight years so I was already familiar to many of the regulars – mostly men\, most of Sicilian heritage: fishermen\, stone masons\, tile masons\, businessmen\, plasterers\, house painters and electricians. Still\, we were all wary when I began showing up every morning with my camera…  but as is often the case\, sharing time together produced a mutual curiosity that wore these barriers down. I and my camera became as much a part of the morning routine as the clattering and tinkling of espresso cups and spoons\, the hissing of steamed milk…  above all else\, those voices speaking Sicilian\, all at once\, rolling up and down\, one louder than the other\, insistent\, confrontational\, passionate\, playful\, flowing and crashing and ebbing and flowing like Gloucester sea waves through the air across the room.” Goldberg was the recipient of the 2002 Print Center Selection Award\, 76th Annual International Competition: Photography\, The Print Center\, Jacqueline van Rhyn\, juror. Paul Cary Goldberg\, Tutta La Familigia is Presented as part of The Print Center 100. Opening Reception: Friday\, October 2\, 5:00 – 7:00pm.
