DESCRIPTION:Open Door offers unique behind-the-scenes tours at Philadelphia’s most intriguing cultural sites to our audience. \nJoin us on our upcoming visit to Taller Puertorriqueño\, also known as El Corazón Cultural del Barrio (The Cultural Heart of Latino Philadelphia)\, a community-based cultural organization that preserves\, develops and promotes Puerto Rican arts and culture\, grounded in the conviction that embracing one’s cultural heritage is central to community empowerment. Taller (literally “workshop”) has its roots in printmaking\, established in 1974 by artists and activists looking to provide cultural training alternatives to local youth. They created a community-based graphic arts workshop\, and sparked a program of vibrant neighborhood murals. \nWe will enjoy a special-access tour\, including a guided gallery talk of Taller’s current exhibition Jaime Alvarez: Consumption. Photographing found and discarded objects\, Alvarez explores intimacy\, sentimentality and loss. The show stems from his 2016 residency at RAIR (Recycled Artist in Residency) which operates out of a recycling center in North Philadelphia. \nThis is a free event\, however\, space is limited and RSVP is required. DESCRIPTION:JOIN US FOR A BOOK LAUNCH \nWednesday\, April 11\, 2018\, 6:00pm \nCliff Ross and Philippe Jean: Philadelphia Neighborhood Typefaces \nDesigner Cliff Ross continues leading the way in font innovation through a unique collaboration with local Philadelphia artist\, Philippe Jean. The two artists met years ago as co-workers at Philadelphia Weekly. Together\, the pair has created a book featuring Cliff’s original Philly Fonts and Philippe’s artwork\, all inspired by the city of Philadelphia. \nThe publication is a hybrid of fine art and typography design. Cliff Ross has always had a passion for great typography\, and in 2017 released the first collection of ‘Philly Fonts’. The set featured 10 fonts representing neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. A second generation of fonts\, ‘The Contour Collection’\, was created and launched later that year. In the book\, each font and the complimentary piece of artwork represents a different neighborhood of Philadelphia. Places like Bella Vista\, Manayunk\, Swampoodle and El Centro de Oro have all been represented in font form and accompanied by art\, also inspired by the area. The hardcover book was designed\, printed\, and made in Pennsylvania. Each book also includes a sheet insert of ‘Philly Dingbat’ stickers. The ‘Obvious Philly Dingbats’ was the first collection of Philly-inspired glyphs\, released by Cliff Ross last year. \nYou can find and download all the Philly Fonts at www.phillyfonts.com. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n

The book explores the Philadelphia tradition of the Mummers through a portraits of participants in the brigade known as Wenches. This is the culmination of a 10-year project\, made over 10 New Year’s days from 2009 -2018. \nPlease join us for a reception to celebrate the launch of January 1. \nThe beautifully crafted book was published by L’Artiere (Bentivoglio\, Italy) in an edition of 700. The 64 pages contain 27 tritone black and white plates reproduced at the 10″ x 8″ size of Modica’s original platinum/palladium contact prints. Coburn (Lawrence\, KS)\, Julie Anne Greenberg (Raleigh\, NC)\, and Jacob Koestler (Cleveland\, OH). These artists were selected from the 420 applicants to our 92nd ANNUAL International Competition. He never arrived; a few days later\, Lindberg’s plane was located deep within the wilderness of the White Earth Indian Reservation. \nIn Ghost Guessed Tom Griggs and Paul Kwiatkowski examine how absences caused by death make memories\, no matter how abstract\, more salient and complex. A combination of intimate prose and photographs brings into focus our human connections as filtered through technology and visual media. The 32-page\, full-color book in an edition of 300\, features 12 of Toner’s most recent collage drawings reproduced at their actual size of 12″ x 9 ½”. DESCRIPTION:Lauren Pakradooni & Second State Press \n \nIn conjunction with the exhibition Lauren Pakradooni: Static Slip\, we welcome Pakradooni to discuss her work and process. Immediately following her talk\, we will be enjoy casual conversation with members of Philadelphia’s community print shop Second State Press. \nPakradooni is an artist and educator based in Philadelphia. She earned a BA from Hampshire College\, Amherst\, MA in 2007 and an MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design\, Providence in 2011. Pakradooni is Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Ursinus College\, Collegeville\, PA. Her artwork has been exhibited in a variety of U.S. venues including Leisure\, Denver; Planthouse Gallery\, New York; Vox Populi\, Philadelphia; and in Amsterdam\, Netherlands; Antwerp\, Belgium; and Doha\, Qatar. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies at the University of Texas\, Austin; AS220\, Providence\, RI; Wassaic Project\, Wassaic\, NY; and internationally at Beisinghoff Printmaking Residency\, Diemelstadt-Rhoden\, Germany and Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts\, Doha. She records and performs experimental electronic music\, layering and manipulating handmade cassette tape loops into compositions\, under the moniker Tether. \nSecond State Press’ mission is to foster the development of ideas and innovation in printmaking by providing artists with a professional\, affordable and supportive workspace. The pair will talk about their past projects and the cultural landscape in Philadelphia as well as ideas for future programs and developing new audiences. \nConversation at 6:00pm\, followed by refreshments \n\n \nKsenia Nouril received her PhD in Art History from Rutgers\, The State University of New Jersey\, New Brunswick in 2018. Her dissertation examined the role of history in contemporary art through the work of Olga Chernysheva\, Deimantas Narkevičius\, Paulina Ołowska and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. She graduated summa cum laude from New York University with a BA in Art History and Russian & Slavic Studies. Nouril has organized collection and loan exhibitions for institutions including the Bruce Museum\, Greenwich; Zimmerli Art Museum\, New Brunswick; Lower East Side Printshop\, NY; and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, NY. \n  \nBefore joining the staff at The Print Center\, Nouril was part of a team at MoMA dedicated to researching\, cataloging and interpreting modernist photographic history through the Thomas Walther Collection. She co-organized the 2015 exhibition Production-Reproduction: The Circulation of Photographic Modernism\, 1900-1950. From 2015 to 2017\, Nouril was a Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) Fellow at MoMA. She is a co-editor of and contributor to Art and Theory of Post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe: A Critical Anthology\, 2018 (MoMA/Duke University Press) and has published in exhibition catalogs and magazines\, including ARTMargins Online\, The Calvert Journal and OSMOS. \n  \nPatricia C. Phillips is a writer and curator who focuses on public art\, civic space\, landscape\, the environment – and the intersection of these areas. She is author of Mierle Laderman Ukeles: Maintenance Art\, 2016 (Prestel\, New York); Ursula von Rydingsvard: Working\, 2011 (Prestel); It is Difficult\, a survey of the work of Alfredo Jaar\, 1988 (Actar Press\, Barcelona); and editor of City Speculations\, 1996 (Princeton Architectural Press\, New York). DESCRIPTION:Ongoing during the exhibition \n  \nThe Print Center will host a “Public Typewriter” as part of Philly Typewriter’s “Philadelphia Public Typewriter Program”. Philly Typewriter is a retail store located in Philadelphia that also repairs typewriters and hosts classes and events. A temporary loan of a manual typewriter prepared for use by restoration classes at Philly Typewriter will allow visitors to the exhibition New Typographics: Typewriter Art as Print to make their own typewriter prints. \n  \nHours: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM ♦ Tuesday – Saturday (unless otherwise noted on our website) \nExhibition page
