SUMMARY:Paul Cary Goldberg\, Tutta La Famiglia: Portrait of a Sicilian Cafe in America at University of the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Paul Cary Goldberg’s “Tutta la Famiglia: Portrait of a Sicilian Cafe in America” began in spring 2007 when he started photographing inside Caffé Sicilia. Goldberg writes\, “I had been a semi-regular patron for about eight years so I was already familiar to many of the regulars – mostly men\, most of Sicilian heritage: fishermen\, stone masons\, tile masons\, businessmen\, plasterers\, house painters and electricians. Still\, we were all wary when I began showing up every morning with my camera…  but as is often the case\, sharing time together produced a mutual curiosity that wore these barriers down. I and my camera became as much a part of the morning routine as the clattering and tinkling of espresso cups and spoons\, the hissing of steamed milk…  above all else\, those voices speaking Sicilian\, all at once\, rolling up and down\, one louder than the other\, insistent\, confrontational\, passionate\, playful\, flowing and crashing and ebbing and flowing like Gloucester sea waves through the air across the room.” Goldberg was the recipient of the 2002 Print Center Selection Award\, 76th Annual International Competition: Photography\, The Print Center\, Jacqueline van Rhyn\, juror. Paul Cary Goldberg\, Tutta La Familigia is Presented as part of The Print Center 100. Opening Reception: Friday\, October 2\, 5:00 – 7:00pm.

SUMMARY:An-My Lê\, von Hess Visiting Artist Lecture
DESCRIPTION:BROOKLYN\, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 21: An-My Le is photographed on September 21\, 2012 in Brooklyn\, NY. (Photo by Matt Carr for Home Front Communications)\nAn-My Lê is an artist whose photographs of landscapes transformed by war or other forms of military activity blur the boundaries between fact and fiction and are rich with layers of meaning. A refugee from Vietnam and resident of the United States since 1975\, much of Lê’s work is inspired by her own experience of war and dislocation. Projects include “Viêt Nam” (1994–98)\, in which Lê’s memories of a war-torn countryside are reconciled with the contemporary landscape; “Small Wars” (1999–2002)\, in which Lê photographed and participated in Vietnam War reenactments in South Carolina; and”29 Palms” (2003–04)\, in which United States Marines preparing for deployment play-act scenarios in a virtual Middle East in the California desert. Suspended between the formal traditions of documentary and staged photography\, Lê’s work explores the disjunction between wars as historical events and the ubiquitous representation of war in contemporary entertainment\, politics\, and collective consciousness. \nDuring An-My Lê’s von Hess Visiting Artist Residency in the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts at the University of the Arts she will be creating an original offset print and speaking about her work. \nPresented as part of The Print Center 100.
