SUMMARY:Conversation with Carmen Winant & Donna Ferrato
DESCRIPTION:Presented on Zoom\nRegistration required\n \nCarmen Winant\, 2022. Photo: Jaime Alvarez\n\nDonna Ferrato\, 2015. Photo: Cate Dingley\n\nThe Print Center is pleased to present a virtual conversation between Carmen Winant and Donna Ferrato\, renowned\, photo-based feminist artists working to image domestic violence. Register here. \nThis program foregrounds Ferrato’s work as a pioneer in the photographic depiction of domestic violence and its survival\, reflecting upon it through the larger lenses of feminism and photography today. \nIn their practices\, both Ferrato and Winant explore alternatives to patriarchal modes of image-making related to violence against women. Winant’s hallmark practice of creating collages and installations draws on intensive archival research and uses found photography to explore representations of women’s experiences. Ferrato’s highly personal\, uncensored black and white documentary photographs bring viewers into hidden and intimate worlds. Both are committed to revealing the fullness of women’s lives\, from abuse to pleasure. In conversation\, the two will discuss the problems and possibilities of picturing abuse against women. \nFerrato\, who has lived in New York City since the mid-1990s\, is an internationally acclaimed photojournalist well-known for her groundbreaking documentation of domestic violence. Her seminal book Living With the Enemy (Aperture\, 1991) sparked a national discussion on sexual violence and women’s rights. In 2014\, Ferrato launched the I Am Unbeatable campaign to expose\, document and prevent domestic violence against women and children through real stories of real people. Her new book\, Holy\, (powerHouse Books\, 2021) is a call to action. It proclaims the sacredness of women’s rights and their power to be masters of their own destiny. \nWinant is a prominent photography-based artist who was raised in Philadelphia and lives in Columbus\, OH. She utilizes installation and collage strategies to examine feminist modes of survival and revolt. Winant is the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art in the Department of Art at The Ohio State University. She was a 2019 Guggenheim fellow in photography and has exhibited her work widely\, including at the Museum of Modern Art\, New York. In 2019\, Winant mounted 26 billboards across Canada as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. Her recent artist books include My Birth (SPBH Editions and Image Text Ithaca Press\, 2018)\, Notes on Fundamental Joy (Printed Matter Inc.\, 2019) and Instructional Photography: Learning How to Live Now (Self Publish Be Happy\, 2022). \nThis program is presented in conjunction with Winant’s major exhibition A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures\, at The Print Center.  \nRegister\n

Wearing your heart on your sleeve is to be vulnerable\, to be present\, and to show your whole and authentic self. \nIf this sounds like you… Come gather in the spirit of love… we’ll create poems\, share\, and listen to stories of self-love\, tough love\, love lost\, brotherly love\, and sisterly affection. \nWhat are we going to do? Sit at the table\, TOGETHER – listen -to each other – to music\, make poetry\, and create art that speaks to our mutually LOVING experiences. \nWhy are we doing it? For ALL OF US TO SHARE… to see and feel ourselves in a good\, uplifting\, and generous spotlight.. a LOVING one! You know… L.O.V.E?\n-Ursula Rucker \n\nHeart On Your Sleeve (HOYS) is a winterlong (November 2022 – April 2023) public art and poetry initiative focused on the themes of care and renewal. This six-month project brings together Philadelphia Poets and Artists to co-create compassionate works that appear on insulated take-out coffee sleeves and in public artworks at Elixr Coffee. The project aims to bring the perspectives of poets and artists to the public in small and meaningful ways this winter through an uplifting poem\, an inspiring piece of public art\, or a new piece of clothing. Heart On Your Sleeve is organized by Molly Gross & Ryan Strand Greenberg with support by Elixr Coffee and The Poetry Project. \nPoets: Sojourner Ahebee\, Dilruba Ahmed\, Husnaa Haajarah Hashim\, Sham-e-Ali Nayeem\, Ursula Rucker\, and Eleanor Wilner Artists: Jonai Gibson-Selix\, Hester Stinnett\, Destiny Palmer. SUMMARY:Artist Talk + Book Launch: Alan Nakagawa
DESCRIPTION:Portrait: Elizabeth Withstandley\nPresented in-person and on Zoom \nThe Print Center welcomes the renowned Los Angeles-based artist Alan Nakagawa to Philadelphia! Join us to hear Nakagawa talk about his new book A.I.R. Head: Anatomy of an Artist In Residence\, 2022\, published by Writ Large Projects. \nWatch the Recording \n  \n  \n“Within a short amount of time\, Alan Nakagawa found himself the midst of several artist-in-residence opportunities. It started with the Getty Villa and then the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. Within a few years\, Nakagawa had a half of dozen completed or in the mix. And then the emails started coming. \nArtists wanted to meet with Nakagawa to find out how this happened. To quote The Talking Heads: “Well\, how did I get here?” Like his artwork\, A.I.R. Head: Anatomy of an Artist In Residence is not a straight line nor a soundbite. This book is Nakagawa’s attempt to answer that question through diary entries\, sketches\, ideas and concepts. This book is a history of one artist’s journey through his life\, his personhood and his career.” \n– Writ Large Projects \n  \nAlan Nakagawa is an interdisciplinary artist with archiving tendencies who primarily works with sound\, often incorporating various media and working with communities and their histories. Nakagawa is currently the artist-in-resident at the Gerth Archives\, California State University Dominguez Hills assigned to the newly acquired L.A. Free Press/Art Kunkin Collection.
