SUMMARY:Artist Talk + Book Launch: Tom Griggs
DESCRIPTION:Presented in-person and on Zoom \nWe are thrilled to welcome Tom Griggs back to The Print Center for an Artist Talk and Book Launch celebrating his book A Creature Obeys a Creature That Wants\, 2023\, published in an edition of 400 by Mesæstándar\, Medellín\, Colombia. We will hear about Griggs’ photography and book practice\, and have the opportunity to get a signed copy of this spectacular softcover book with Swiss binding and two part rigid cloth slipcase. This event is free and open to the public. Purchase your copy ahead of time here. \nWatch the recording \n  \nRead what others are saying: \n“In A Creature Obeys a Creature That Wants\, photographer Tom Griggs shows he is as deft with a pen as he is with his camera. Devastating writing accompanies masterful photography to do the impossible: Condense a sprawling family saga into this slim volume.” \n– Nicholas Casey\, staff writer at The New York Times \n  \n“Any vernacular photo enthusiast will tell you that little skill is required to snap a great picture. But taking a series of such photos and sequencing them in a meaningful way requires a mastery far beyond an MFA. Adding text to this mix makes this task virtually impossible. It’s like adding weights to a house of cards. Tom Griggs is one of the few authors to achieve this balancing act. With A Creature Obeys a Creature That Wants\, Griggs weaves his own text and photographs with his father’s notes and snapshots. Authored with restraint and sophistication\, the result is more like a powerful novella than a family album.” \n– Alec Soth

DESCRIPTION:Presented in-person and on Zoom\n(Rescheduled from May) \nJoin us for a discussion exploring 50 Years of Philadelphia’s Women Arts Leaders. Since its founding in 1915\, 9 out of 10 of The Print Center’s Directors have been women. Elizabeth Spungen\, (Executive Director since 2006)\, will be joined by former Directors Christine Filippone (1998 – 2003) and Ofelia Garcia (1978 – 1986) for a discussion moderated by colleague Thora Jacobson (Director of Fleisher Art Memorial 1972 – 2006; Philadelphia Art Alliance 2014 – 2018). They will discuss their experiences related to being a woman arts leader in Philadelphia – and the challenges and circumstances unique to that position. We will also explore how that role has changed\, what has not\, and what change they worked to render. \nRegister for Zoom \nRegistration not required for in-person attendance. \nThis program is presented as part of (re)FOCUS\, a citywide project celebrating and reflecting on 50 years of feminism in the arts.

SUMMARY:Conversation with ULAE
DESCRIPTION:Presented in-person and on Zoom \nPlease join us for a Conversation with Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE)! Lauren Rosenblum\, The Print Center’s Jensen Bryan Curator\, will be joined in conversation by ULAE’s Director\, Larissa Goldston and Master Printer and Studio Manager\, Brian Berry.  \nRegister for Zoom \nRegistration not required for in-person attendance. \n  \nAbout Universal Limited Art Editions \nULAE is celebrated for its nearly seventy years of steadfast dedication to supporting the work of contemporary artists and sustaining the tradition of fine art printmaking in the United States. It was founded in 1957 in a small cottage on Long Island by Tatyana Grosman (1904-1982) as a printmaking workshop dedicated to creating fine art lithography. She established a guiding ethos centered entirely on the artist’s vision by offering exclusive and nearly limitless access to the lithography press. ULAE soon gained recognition for its collaboration with young artists of the sixties\, including the luminaries Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg\, and led the way for a revival in the medium in the United States. \nBill Goldston assumed the position of Director in the early 1980s and followed Grosman’s precedent by inviting younger generations of artists. He built a larger\, state-of-the-art printmaking facility staffed by several highly skilled master printers to ensure ULAE could meet their ambitions. To this day\, under the directorship of Bill’s daughter Larissa Goldston\, ULAE continues to collaborate with the most prominent and innovative artists of our times in lithography\, intaglio\, woodcut and digital processes. \nThe Museum of Modern Art collects all of their editions\, from its first to the most recent. There have been several major exhibitions of work produced at ULAE\, including a commemoration of its first twenty-five years at the Art Institute of Chicago\, 1990\, and a celebration of its fortieth anniversary at the Corcoran Art Gallery\, Washington\, DC\, 1997.
