SUMMARY:Opening Reception and Gallery Talk for Summer 2016 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening Reception and Gallery Talk for our Summer 2016 exhibitions\, Jeffrey Dell: Sightings\, Andrew Fillmore: This Time is Always the Present and Leah Mackin: Portable Document. \nGallery Talk: 5:30pm \nOpening Reception: 6:00 – 8:00pm \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the shows: \nThe prints in Jeffrey Dell’s exhibition\, which depict sheets of curled and folded paper\, are deceptively simple. In his screenprints\, colors shift and flux\, challenging our perceptual abilities. “I am interested\,” says Dell\, “in how basic human desires cooperate with facilities of perception. I am trying to make an image that is seductive\, but where the very thing that seduces us also deceives.”\n_________________________________________________ \nThe photographs in Andrew Fillmore’s exhibition are still lifes and portraits\, all of which depict the objects and scenarios most immediate to his everyday life. Fillmore says he is concerned with “the idea that within the simplicity of these moments\, a balance of fragments and associations might disclose the psychological threads of my experience in the present.”\n_________________________________________________ \nLeah Mackin’s exhibition Portable Document is composed of images\, based on digital photographs\, of historical material available online. Mackin responds to the digital surrogate of the scrapbook\, examining the handling of and relationship with archival materials as physical objects. In this show\, work from Mackin’s ongoing investigation of materials\, both physically and intellectually\, include printed works on paper and sculpture that reflect on her interaction with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (the institution that holds The Print Center’s Archives).

SUMMARY:Henry Horenstein: Lecture\, Films + Books!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening with Henry Horenstein\, the renowned photographer\, filmmaker and much-loved Professor of Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Horenstein has published more than 30 books\, including Animalia\, Close Relations\, Show and Honky Tonk\, which was the subject of a solo show at The Print Center in 2004. His photographic textbooks have been a resource for students over the decades. \nHorenstein is an engaging and entertaining storyteller\, bringing humor and wisdom to tales from his remarkable career. He will share his stories\, images and present his two newest books: Histories: Tales From the 70s and his memoir\, Shoot What You Love: Tips and Tales from A Working Photographer. \nShoot What you Love is a book every artist should read. Horenstein’s warmth and wit shine through as he recounts his thoughts on all the places and situations photography has introduced him to. From artist statements to fine art and commercial photography\, corporate jobs\, working in far flung locales\, book publishing and documentary film making\, he covers it all in his inimitable\, approachable yet brilliant way. \nThis is also a special opportunity to see his three films SPOKE\, Mr. Showbiz and Partners. \nA book signing will follow the talk – both new books and a selection of old favorites will be available for purchase.\n \nHistories: Tales From The 70s – a monograph featuring his earliest documentary work. \nHistories: Tales From the 70s\, 2016\, Honky Tonk Editions\, Hardcover\, 144 pages\, $60 \n  \n  \n  \n \nShoot What You Love: Tips and Tales from A Working Photographer – a visual memoir of Henry Horenstein’s career\, as well as a history of the last several decades in photography. \nShoot What You Love: Tips and Tales from A Working Photographer\, 2016\, Monacelli Press\, Hardcover\, 208 pages\, $40 \n  \n  \n  \nREAD THE REVIEWS \n“Henry Horenstein: Histories: Tales From the 70’s\,” Greer Muldowney\, LENSCRATCH\, December 10\, 2014 \n“Henry Horenstein’s ‘Shoot What You Love’\,” David Schonauer\, Pro Photo Daily\, December 15\, 2016 \n \nArtist Statement \nOver the years I’ve photographed many different types of subjects\, even animals and the human form. But I’ve always returned to my roots as a documentary photographer. More than anything\, I like a good story. And I try to tell one in a direct way\, with humor and a punch line\, if possible. With this in mind\, I have photographed country musicians in Nashville\, my family and friends in Massachusetts\, horse racing at Saratoga\, nightlife in Buenos Aires\, old highways everywhere\, everyone in Cajun Louisiana\, South American baseball\, camel breeding in Dubai\, tri-racial families in Maryland\, and much\, much more. \nFor subjects\, I prefer older cultures and places\, especially disappearing ones. That’s what my history teachers\, Jesse Lemisch (at University of Chicago) and E. P. Thompson (at University of Warwick)\, taught me to do. These cultures and places might vanish\, but it is a historian’s righteous duty to make sure that they leave a trace. I also was very influenced by another teacher in Chicago\, John G. Cawelti\, who taught me (and doubting historians predating him) that popular culture should be taken seriously. One other great influence for me was my teacher at Rhode Island School of Design\, Harry Callahan. Harry encouraged me to “shoot what you love\,” and to pay no attention to what others are doing. “Even if you make bad pictures\,” he said\, “you’ll have a good time.” Thank you for that\, Harry. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nNoted photographer and filmmaker Henry Horenstein was a history student at University of Chicago\, before switching to photography. He studied with classic photographers Harry Callahan\, Aaron Siskind\, and Minor White\, but his background in history influenced his choice of subject matter from country music to horse racing to burlesque. Henry has published over 30 books\, including classic textbooks Black and White Photography\, Beyond Basic Photography\, and Digital Photography; and monographs Honky Tonk\, Shoot What You Love\, Histories\, Racing Days\, Animalia\, Humans\, Show\, and Close Relations. Henry’s photographs are widely collected and exhibited internationally. He lives in Boston\, MA\, and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. \n  \nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:David Freese | East Coast: Arctic to Tropic
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening with photographer David Freese\, who will talk about his work and the newly released East Coast: Arctic to Tropic. \nFreese has devoted many years to photographing the coasts of the United States. Following the publication of the very-well received West Coast: Bering to Baja is his new book documenting the eastern seaboard. Together his books illustrate “our uneasy relationship to the vast oceans and seas that cover 70% of our planet and home.” \n      \nHuman beings can be clever\, resourceful\, and ingenious. The challenge is whether or not we can harness and master our skills and use new technologies and policies in a worldwide endeavor to save and protect our future whereabouts. These images will no doubt become a reference point for succeeding generations. Many of the areas I photographed will be underwater—only the time frame is in question. This book is meant to heighten awareness by letting people see for themselves – through the arts of photography and writing – our uneasy relationship to the vast oceans and seas that cover 70% of our planet and home. – David Freese \nBoth of Freese’s books will be available for purchase and signing following his talk. \nEast Coast: Arctic to Tropic\, text by Jenna Butler & Simon Winchester\, 2017\, George F. The work she has created for The Print Center\, Darkness\, dramatically depicts a Venetian glass chandelier from a church in Murano\, Italy. \nThe Philadelphia-based artist is also the Founder and Director of Officina Stamperia del Notaio\, an artists’ residency and printmaking studio in Sicily. Her work has been acquired by the Yale University Art Gallery; Detroit Institute of Arts; New York Public Library; Whitney Museum of American Art; Cleveland Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and\, the RISD Museum. She received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant and is represented by Cade Tompkins Projects\, Providence. \n  \nVisionary: $1\,200 for four individuals \n— Private champagne tour of Fata Morgana with Serena Perrone \n— Elegant dinner and conversation with the artist at the home of Ofelia Garcia \n— Darkness by Serena Perrone \n  \nBenefactor: $600 per person; $850 per couple \n— Private champagne tour of Fata Morgana with Serena Perrone \n— Elegant dinner and conversation with the artist at the home of Ofelia Garcia \n— Darkness by Serena Perrone \n  \nPatron: $300 per person; $550 per couple \n— Private champagne tour of Fata Morgana with Serena Perrone \n— Elegant dinner and conversation with the artist at the home of Ofelia Garcia \n  \nSupporter: $100 per person \n— Private champagne tour of Fata Morgana with Serena Perrone \n  \nFormer Honorees \nJesse Burke \nSarah McEneaney \nMatt Neff \nLydia Panas \nBill Scott \nEmma Wilcox \nWilliam Earle Williams \n  \nDinner Date Committee \nJudith Brodsky \nDiane Burko \nJulie Jensen Bryan + Robert Bryan* \nStewart Cades \nAvi Eden* \nEileen Kennedy + Robert Heim* \nRobert Morrison* \nLiz Osborne \nBarbara Schaff* \nMichael Shannon* \nInnis Howe Shoemaker \nEvan Summer \nJudith Stein \nAnna + Menno Tas* \nCade Tompkins \nJoan Wadleigh Curran* \nJohn Wind* \n  \n* Former Host \nAs of April 28\, 2017 \n  \nHonorary Council \nLinda Lee Alter \nJames D.
