{"id":2673,"date":"1945-01-01T13:30:28","date_gmt":"1945-01-01T17:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/printcenter.org\/100\/?p=2673"},"modified":"2016-02-18T17:53:17","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T22:53:17","slug":"stanley-william-hayter-and-the-artists-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/printcenter.org\/100\/1945\/01\/01\/stanley-william-hayter-and-the-artists-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanley William Hayter and the Artist\u2019s Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1945 The Print Center sent out a letter announcing a new initiative: The Artist\u2019s Workshop. \u201cThis is not to be class or school,\u201d the letter reads, \u201cbut to be for artists who are interested in technical research in graphic materials.\u201d Over the next seven years, the British artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/stanley-william-hayter-1257\">Stanley William Hayter<\/a> (1901 &#8211; 1988) came to Philadelphia monthly to instruct at the Workshop. He was well known for his innovative, collaborative approach to the print workshop. He established this approach in Paris at Atelier 17, where many of the Surrealist artists, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joan-miro.net\/\">Joan Mir\u00f3<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/artists\/5804\">Yves Tanguy<\/a>, learned to print. Hayter moved his studio to New York in 1940 because of the war, and had a profound impact on many American artists, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/reginald-marsh\/\">Reginald Marsh<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackson-pollock.org\/\">Jackson Pollock<\/a>.
