The Print Center welcomes the renowned Los Angeles-based artist Alan Nakagawa<\/strong> to Philadelphia! Join us to hear Nakagawa talk about his new book A.I.R. Head: Anatomy of an Artist In Residence<\/strong><\/em>, 2022, published by Writ Large Projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin a short amount of time, Alan Nakagawa found himself the midst of several artist-in-residence opportunities. It started with the Getty Villa and then the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. Within a few years, Nakagawa had a half of dozen completed or in the mix. And then the emails started coming.<\/p>\n

Artists wanted to meet with Nakagawa to find out how this happened. To quote The Talking Heads: “Well, how did I get here?” Like his artwork, A.I.R. Head: Anatomy of an Artist In Residence<\/em> is not a straight line nor a soundbite. This book is Nakagawa’s attempt to answer that question through diary entries, sketches, ideas and concepts. This book is a history of one artist’s journey through his life, his personhood and his career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alan Nakagawa<\/strong> is an interdisciplinary artist with archiving tendencies who primarily works with sound, often incorporating various media and working with communities and their histories. Nakagawa is currently the artist-in-resident at the Gerth Archives, California State University Dominguez Hills assigned to the newly acquired L.A. Free Press\/Art Kunkin Collection. He was the first artist in resident for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and the Los Angeles County Library. Nakagawa is a recipient of two Art Matters grants, a City of Los Angeles Artist Fellowship, a California Community Foundation Mid-Career Artist Fellowship and a Monbusho Scholarship. He co-founded arts collective non-profit Collage Ensemble Inc. (1984-2011), curated experimental music weekly Ear Meal Webcast (2010-2017), produced public practice artist interviews podcast VISITINGS Radio Show (2017-2020) and administers the website Asian American Futurism (2022-Present).<\/p>\n
