Catch a Star

goldstarsThrough the planning of Demetrius Oliver: Canicular we have learned that timing is everything.  From the timing of the setting sun and the rising of Sirius in the night sky, Canicular was developed around phenomena far outside human control. Sirius is best seen on evenings from winter to mid-spring (February evenings being the most ideal) – leading to the timing of our exhibition from early January to late March.  As an added challenge, Canicular is only open if skies are clear, and with this winter season, those have been hard to come by!

In keeping with Canicular’s spirit of exploration and creative interpretation of the cosmos, we encourage you to enter our Catch a Star contest. Tweet / Instagram or post on our Facebook page pictures of the stars in your life.  Be creative and interpret the stars, stargazing, and the night sky in whatever way you see fit–whether it’s a gold star, a celebrity, a starfish, or the stars in your eyes, send us your photos! Two lucky submissions will receive a free copy of the Demetrius Oliver: Canicular publication by Michelle White and John Caperton, designed by Chad Kloepfer and Jeff Ramsey of Kloepfer-Ramsey in collaboration with Oliver. This will be the first book-length publication dedicated to Oliver.

To enter, post your photos and use the hashtag #catchastar so we can see and share your posts, and don’t forget to tag us!  All photos will be placed in a Facebook Album and our fans will vote for their favorite.  In addition to the people’s choice award, our curator will also select his favorite.  Start sharing now–voting will take place the last week of Canicular, from March 16 – 22 and the winners will be announced March 25! Post as many photos as you like and remember–be creative!
