Larson Shindelman is the collaborative duo of Nate Larson & Marni Shindelman. Nate Larson is Chair of Photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Baltimore. He received an MFA from The Ohio State University, Columbus. Marni Shindelman is an Associate Professor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, Athens. She received an MFA from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Larson Shindelman have worked collaboratively since 2007. Their collaborative work exhibits widely, including most recently a commissioned solo exhibition at the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY. Past solo exhibitions have taken place at the Las Vegas Contemporary Arts Center; Orlando Museum of Art; and Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, OR. Selections of their work have been shown at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR; Denver Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; and the Portland Art Museum, OR. Numerous publications have featured their work including Wired, The Picture Show from NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and British Journal of Photography. Larson Shindelman received the 2016 John Gutmann Fellowship and have been artists-in-residence at Light Work and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Flash Powder Projects released their first monograph in January 2016.
Statement of the Artist:
Larson Shindelman’s collaborative practice investigates embedded location geotags and the data tracks we amass through networked communication. #Mobilize furthers their examination of how smartphones have contributed to a new era of social justice, including citizen journalism, information sharing and community protest by exploring themes of racial discrimination, violence, right to protest, gun violence, police relations, political activism and other social concerns.
