Olney Charter High School students collaborated on a series of printmaking, painting and sculpture projects that explored the question, “What is Black Art?” Learning about the work of artists such as Martin Puryear, Odili Donald Odita, Hank Willis Thomas and Jayson Musson sparked thoughtful discussions as students questioned what the work of each artist represented. Students then focused on creating prints and small sculptures that revealed information about their lives, personal histories and interests. These individual artworks were combined and curated into “identity boxes” that contained visual symbols of each student’s personal narrative.
