Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School is a K-12 Freedom school that uses African centered and culturally responsive pedagogical methodologies to promote respect for scholarship, service learning, conflict resolution and cultural democracy.

Students at Sankofa Freedom Academy interpreted the themes from The Politics of Rhetoric by conceiving a project to “rebrand themselves.” Their hand-drawn designs incorporated slang terminology to represent, celebrate and honor black-teenage-vernacular culture. Students transferred their designs onto silkscreens and experimented with different substrates, screenprinting their designs onto paper, canvas and fabric. They brought in clothing to print on, and also created hoodies, cloaks, skull caps and bandanas from their screenprinted fabrics.
