10th graders from the Philadelphia Military Academy were inspired by William Villalongo’s artwork Embodied, featured in the Graphicstudio exhibition as well as the Halloween holiday. After learning the “twelve principles” of animation and storyboarding, students voted to animate a monster chase scene. They directed each other in making photographs and videos, which were then stitched together and edited to tell a clear, simple story in under 30 seconds. After studying that video frame-by-frame, they created gesture and/or figure drawings of the characters from each still frame on paper. Each drawing was photographed and used as a one second clip, which was spliced together with all the others to create a complete “exquisite corpse” animation. It was screened for the class and reflections were shared. In addition to the final animation screening, students colored one frame from their clip which was printed and displayed alongside the animation, so that they could see at a glance their individual designs and all of the unique styles that came together in the final piece.
