At Vaux Big Picture High School, the students’ strong interest in printmaking, textile dyeing and fiber arts guided their project composition. The semester began with experimentation with pysanky egg-dyeing, batik, indigo and fiber reactive dyes. These techniques were implemented to create atmospheric color fields on fabric that were used as backgrounds for block printed landscapes. Students explored ways of creating their own landscapes using fantasy or memory-based imagery, and/or direct representation of their homes and communities. After creating the layered personal landscapes, students chose final projects which were either installation or wearable art. Many students personalized hoodies using all of the techniques they learned. Others block printed old and new images onto a mural to create a densely patterned surface. The mural is permanently installed on the wall across from the art classroom.
