Olney Charter High School students explored three major themes inspired by the exhibitions; abstraction, layering and collections. Students constructed unconventional mark-making tools by attaching bubble wrap, sponges and steel wool to large dowels. They stood over large sheets of paper and discovered how their new tools made marks. A reduction printing project had students plan an entire composition, carefully considering each layer of color, and plan how they would carve their rubber blocks to allow the image to build upon itself. For the culminating final project, students created new artwork from their own “collection” of works which they produced throughout the residency. Each student created a panel for a quilt, which represented their individual journey. When presented together, the paper quilt displayed the class’ shared experience.
