Students in two classes at Hardy Williams Charter High School chose to focus on themes of identity and personal narrative inspired by featured artists Raque Ford and Kat Richards. Their multi-media photography project “On the Map,” explored geographic identity, and utilized both analog and digital processes. In an introductory class discussion, students were asked to list places in the world they would like to visit. Responses included a mix of motherlands/places of familial heritage, or fantasy destinations. Each student then selected one location to research, to find images of its landscape as well as a map showing its location in the world. These were converted into digital negatives and double exposed as beautifully-layered cyanotype prints. Students also experimented with cyanotype self-portraits which they printed on t-shirts.
