Spring 2024
Teaching Artist: Amber Rivera
Classroom Teacher: Dominique Samarco
Two groups of students at Hardy Williams Charter High School participated in a series of process-based lessons inspired by Nancy Hellebrand’s unique approach to portraiture, and Stephanie Santana’s printed quilts. In the classroom, students experimented with various ways to print on items such as tote bags and t-shirts. including relief printing with foam rollers and stenciling with white glue for resist-dying. On their field trip, students visited an exhibition at The Papermill Community of Artists studio building and mounted a photoshoot. Later, they incorporated portraits made there into their projects, and made zines using their collected images.
