The 11th grade art class at the Philadelphia Military Academy was introduced to the exhibitions Rafael Soldi: CARGAMONTÓN and Chinn Wang: Soaking Up Local Color, which led to a discussion about social issues, marginalized populations and the history of protest posters in the United States. Students incorporated text and symbols reflecting their personal views into designs for handmade stencils. They then used their stencils to create monoprints. For a project exploring identity, students used digital cameras to learn how natural and artificial light affect the image. They photographed each other and then learned software to convert their photographs into digital stencils. Printed copies of the digital stencils were transferred onto hand-painted backgrounds.
