11th and 12th graders at Vaux Big Picture High School explored the themes of abstraction and identity through mini-lessons that introduced them to several new art making techniques. They used Polaroid Instax cameras to learn about composition in photography before experimenting with embroidery and stitching techniques, marbling fabric, and layering colors to make prints using airbrushed stencils. Many students created mixed media artworks that combined their Instax photographs with hand-drawn text and found imagery to create collages, and each student constructed a small pillow from their marbled fabrics to take home.
