Fall 2023
Teaching Artist: Sofie Seymour
Classroom Teacher: Grace Hurley / James Gallagher
At Vaux Big Picture High School, two classes were inspired by the theme of identity based on work in the exhibitions Raque Ford: Where do I start? and Kat Richards: Shapes of Change, at The Print Center. They were asked to consider their own personal identities in the context of their communities. Printed posters and zines were brought into the classroom and to be handled by the students in order to show examples of artwork that focuses on community with social justice and activist content. Students learned various techniques, including relief printing, screenprinting and bookmaking. They used what they learned to develop zines and posters that highlighted community values and issues important to them.
