At Vaux Big Picture High School, students explored various processes such as photography, collage, story-boarding and bookmaking – and then created works that considered concepts of “true beauty” as represented in Nancy Hellebrand’s exhibition at The Print Center. Students were inspired by the iconic depictions of black ancestors in Stephanie Santana’s work, and were also informed by the photographic portraits of Carrie Mae Weems and Tawny Chatmon. Final projects included mixed-media collages featuring original poems and photographs, comics, zines and collaged, found imagery focused on ideals of beauty.
