Students at Furness High School explored the theme of identity based on the exhibitions Raque Ford: Where do I start? and Kat Richards: Shapes of Change. Categories such as Duality (i.e., identity in a school community vs. outside of school), Representation (i.e., imagery symbolizing a student’s individualism, aspirations/dreams and hobbies), and Culture (aspects of identity such as language, fashion and food) were discussed as different ways of representing self, and selected by students as a focus for their work. Students learned photographic processes that were used to captured these conceptual explorations, such as how to create and manipulate cyanotypes using hydrogen peroxide, bleach and vinegar. Using these techniques, each student exposed and completed multiple images. They also crafted personal artist statements and participated in sophisticated critique sessions.
