At Furness High School, students were inspired by the theme of feminism as well as alternative approaches to portraiture they learned about by seeing the exhibition at The Print Center. Students were initially asked to represent gender in the context of their own identity in two ways: showing themselves with both their masculine and feminine sides represented, and depicting their relationships with women in their lives who they admire. Through a series of exploratory lessons and class discussions on gender stereotypes, students created individual works utilizing a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography and collage. Inspired by the experimentation with materials demonstrated by Stephanie Santana and Martie Zelt, students explored the use of materials that emphasized feminine stereotypes, including applying melted lipstick to surfaces using makeup sponges.
