Fall 2018
Classroom Teacher: Ayinde Purnell
Teaching-Artist: Steph Dobosh
Students in an art class at Sankofa Freedom Academy were inspired by the concept of abstraction and the collages featured in the Rochelle Toner exhibition. After initial mark-making exercises and learning how to make image transfers, the students were excited by the idea of using cut paper to compose an image. Before creating their own collages, they learned about collage artists such as Richard Hamilton, Hannah Hoch and Kurt Schwitters, and about the intentionality of collecting source material to convey a message. The students’ final artwork was a collaborative composition that included mark-making, image transfers and collage.
