Dark Melon, 2018

The Print Center is pleased to present Qiaoyi Shi: Birthday Party, a Gallery Store Feature exhibition of recent work by the New York City-based printmaker and illustrator. Shi invites the viewer to indulge in the joys of printmaking with her playful, sensual works that celebrate food, color and the body. Her abstracted representations of fruit and anthropomorphized characters are based on edible delights.

Shi’s working process begins with illustrations created using vector technology, through which she digitally layers vibrant hues and patterns to produce appetizing screenprints, photolithographs and Risograph prints. In Shi’s fruit-inspired diptychs, compositions printed in differing colorways are paired. These divergent interpretations of the same design emphasize the ability of vibrant color, or lack thereof, to augment the sense of movement and depth experienced by the viewer.
