The Fabric Workshop & Museum (FWM) was founded in 1977 by Marion “Kippy” Stroud (1939 – 2015) after she had spent many years as a Board member of The Print Center and the Artistic Director of Prints in Progress. While FWM has become internationally recognized for its ambitious commissions to many of today’s most significant artists, the education of Philadelphia youth has always been a core part of its mission. This educational focus, seen in FWM’s comprehensive and renowned Apprenticeship Program, grew directly out of Prints in Progress, which early on focused on utilizing printmaking to teach technical skills along with creative expression. Will Stokes Jr. participated in Prints in Progress while he was in high school and has been a visiting artist at FWM since its inception. Some of the earliest projects created at the FWM were screenprinted, fabric yardage from Stokes’ designs.
