Kathleen Edwards: Our Seventh Director

posted in: Timeline

Kathleen Edwards served as the Executive Director from 1989 until 1998. She set out to make the organization as well-known within the city as it was nationally and internationally. She recognized a national trend toward collaborative printmaking and a second wave of print shops opening across the country.  In response to this renaissance, The Print Center established The Print Center Residency Series. That in turn led to Crossing Over/Changing Places a seven year project of commissions and exhibitions of prints by the Lower East Side Print Shop, Pyramid Atlantic, Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper (now known as The Brodsky Center), C. R. Ettinger Studio and The Print Center. The exhibition traveled throughout the US and Europe from 1992 – 1995. Other significant exhibitions organized by Edwards include: prints by Jerome Kaplan; work by Fluxus artist David Thompson; Philadelphia’s first exhibition of Kara Walker prints; the group exhibition Meeting of the Satie Society in conjunction with a John Cage exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and first time solo exhibitions for Laura Letinsky and John Andrews, both ‘discovered’ through the Annual International Competition.
